Living With Mi’kma’ki in Nipniku’s

Trees Fully Leafed Time

Nipniku’s (June)  is known as Trees Fully Leafed Time. It marks a beautiful turning point in the year, as spring shifts into summer and Mi’kma’ki comes alive in full green. The trees are rich with leaves, symbolizing growth, change, and the strength of our connection to the land.

At JJSM, this time also signals the end of the school year. It’s a moment to reflect on all we’ve learned and experienced—from the sound of tiam calling in the fall to the sweet work of making maple syrup to the excitement of watching frogs grow in Sqoljuiku’s. Each season has brought its own teachings and stories.

As we prepare to step into summer, we carry those memories and teachings with us, grateful for the land, our community, and the learning journey we share together.

About John J. Sark Memorial School

Named after John James Sark, a much-respected community leader and teacher, the school’s establishment would not have been possible without the perseverance of many community members.

Our Language and Culture

We aim to deepen students’ understanding of our Mi’kmaq language and culture while laying the foundation for a successful learning journey.

Learning from the Land

Drawing on the traditions of our Mi’kmaq culture, we weave land-based education and experiential activities into our curriculum at every grade level.
