Living With Mi’kma’ki in Abuknajit

Snow Blinding Time

Abuknajit (February) is known as Snow Blinding Time. The snow is still plentiful, but the sun is getting stronger, and this combination can be hard on the eyes. JJSMS students get out on the land a lot during this month, so they probably notice this. Look out for the full moon around the 13th of this month.

About John J. Sark Memorial School

Named after John James Sark, a much-respected community leader and teacher, the school’s establishment would not have been possible without the perseverance of many community members.

Our Language and Culture

We aim to deepen students’ understanding of our Mi’kmaq language and culture while laying the foundation for a successful learning journey.

Learning from the Land

Drawing on the traditions of our Mi’kmaq culture, we weave land-based education and experiential activities into our curriculum at every grade level.
