Living With Mi’kma’ki in Siwkewiku’s

Spring Time, Sweet Water Time, or Maple Sugar Time

Siwkewiku’s (March) is known as Spring Time, Sweet Water Time, or Maple Sugar Time. Students at JJSM are watching the outdoor thermometers. When the temperatures are above freezing in the daytime but below freezing at night,  we know it is time to tap maple trees and make yummy syrup from the sap we collect.  We learn how to harvest in ways that won’t hurt the trees and how to leave enough for other creatures who rely on the nutritious sap. Look out for the full maple sugar moon around the middle of this month.
